Salary Range:

The salary range for this position is $102,060 to $113,443, depending on the successful candidate's years of teaching experience at the college-level. Purpose:

Santa Clara University is a private, Jesuit, Catholic university located in the heart of California's Silicon Valley. The University is focused on creating an academic community that educates citizens and leaders who will build a more humane, just, and sustainable world.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Santa Clara University is offering a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in any area connected to the broad field of geometry. An appropriate candidate will have the ability to develop and teach lower and upper division mathematics courses. Specific assignments may include Survey of Geometry and Differential Geometry. The Department, like most departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, is a strictly undergraduate program.

The University, the College, and the Department have a longstanding culture of equally valuing research and teaching for all tenure stream faculty. Therefore, successful candidates must have a strong commitment to both teaching and research, with the ability to establish and maintain an active research program. Research programs that include some possibility to involve undergraduates are especially attractive. Teaching responsibilities will include traditional lower division coursework as well as upper division coursework suitable for the candidate's area of expertise. Tenure-track faculty typically teach two courses during each 10-week academic quarter, for three quarters.

Successful candidates should demonstrate not only potential for excellent undergraduate teaching and promise in sustained research and scholarly publication, but also effective service to the Department, College, or University. Candidates should also display initiative and have potential for leadership, have effective communication skills and a strong potential to work effectively and collegially with students, colleagues, and others, have a demonstrated interest or experience in recruiting or mentoring students from underrepresented groups, as well as an understanding and support of the University's mission and goals.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must:

(1) Possess a doctorate degree in Mathematics or a closely allied field

(2) Have appropriate university-level teaching experience

(3) Have a sustainable research program

(4) Provide a completed application.

Preferred Qualifications:
(1) Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SCU goals of diversity and equity.

(2) Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduates.

Responsibilities:
Tenure track faculty at SCU are teaching scholars who are expected to balance teaching, research, and service. Successful candidates must have a strong commitment to excellent teaching, the ability to establish and maintain an active research program, and provide service to the Department, College, or University. Teaching responsibilities will include development and teaching of traditional lower division coursework as well as upper division coursework suitable for the candidate's area of expertise, as well as student advising and mentoring. The official load for tenure-track faculty is seven courses over three academic quarters, with a one-course reduction for research-active faculty; that is, the typical load is two 10-week courses per academic quarter, for three quarters.

More specifically, duties include but are not limited to:

TEACHING
1. Teach lower- and upper-division courses in the major and university core curriculum, as assigned by the chair, including Math 101 (Survey of Geometry) and Math 174 (Differential Geometry). SCU is on the quarter system and a typical load is two courses per quarter. Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

a. Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.
b. Assigning and evaluating written work, projects, and exams that align with course or core learning objectives and providing timely feedback to students.
c. Holding weekly office hours at times reasonably convenient to students.

d. Assigning and submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.
e. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations in each section for all courses.

2. Develop and teach courses that contribute to curriculum development in the relevant degree program and/or the university core. Faculty teaching university core courses should follow an approved syllabus or work with the chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.

3. Participate in assessment of student learning for courses in the department.

4. Provide informed advice and mentoring to undergraduate students.

5. Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or by the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

RESEARCH
1. Develop a research program at SCU that will result in the publication of peer-reviewed publications, monographs, and/or creative work per the department's scholarship standards.

2. Preference will be given to candidates with a research program that can accommodate the participation of undergraduates.

SERVICE
1. Provide effective service to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, the College, the University and profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, leadership, and community service performed by virtue of professional expertise or association with the university as appropriate to rank and experience.

7. Graduate Transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable in the initial application)
8. At least one example of representative scholarship, such as a published article or book chapter, or dissertation chapter, etc.
