Department Description:
USD's engineering program was founded in 1987. It was established as a school in 2013 by Darlene Marcos Shiley, whose extraordinary vision and inspiration resonate in the hallways, communities, and hearts of engineering students and faculty. Through the years, engineering has grown into a bustling program. The School offers five undergraduate programs, including computer science, electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, integrated engineering, and mechanical engineering. Also, the five master's degree programs consist of Applied Artificial Intelligence; Applied Data Science; Cybersecurity Engineering; Engineering, Sustainability and Health; and Innovation, Technology, & Entrepreneurship. The School is ranked #15 in the nation among non-doctoral granting engineering programs by U.S. News & World Report.
The Shiley Marcos School of Engineering contains three centers: the Center for CyberSecurity Engineering and Technology, the Center for Digital Civil Society, and the Engineering Exchange for Social Justice. The School serves 850 undergraduate students and 350 graduate students and has 48 full-time faculty and 30 part-time faculty members. Detailed Description:
The University of San Diego's Copley Library seeks an energetic, entrepreneurial-style Engineering and Computer Science Librarian who is passionate about creating and providing library services to Engineering and Computer Science faculty and students. This librarian works onsite and is fully embedded in the Shiley Marcos School of Engineering, meaning the librarian's office is in the Engineering School. This 12-month tenure-track faculty position reports to the Dean of the University Library and works under the direction of the Coordinator of Graduate programs.
The Engineering and Computer Science Librarian will be deeply engaged and work across a broad-based constituency in the School of Engineering as a member of the Copley Library faculty. This individual is responsible for cultivating a strong collaborative and consultative relationship with faculty and students through one-on-one in-depth research consultations, collection development, and instruction for both undergraduate and graduate programs in face-to-face, hybrid, and online environments. Teaching responsibilities will include curricula and research support, library research methods classes, course-integrated instruction sessions, online education courses, specialized trainings, and workshops. In addition, the Engineering and Computer Science Librarian will assist faculty and students with APA style, IEEE, Endnote, altmetrics, impact factors, literature reviews, copyright, publishing opportunities and procedures by locating data sets and statistics, and grant writing research support. The librarian will have experience using SpringShare products, creating tutorials, and understanding the academic landscape regarding open educational resources, scholarly communication, and electronic resources. The Engineering and Computer Science Librarian will periodically present at the School of Engineering faculty and department meetings. This librarian is responsible for promoting a positive image of the library in the School of Engineering.
This embedded librarian will possess the skill set and interpersonal abilities that will allow them to professionally build a rapport with and advocate for engineering faculty and students. The Engineering and Computer Science Librarian will collaborate with the embedded librarian cohort and consult with the Digital Initiatives Librarian to promote the library's institutional repository. This librarian will partner on other services and new initiatives with the Engineering faculty and staff, Copley Library faculty, as well as serve on engineering, library, and university committees. They will refer the Engineering faculty and students to appropriate offices and services on campus. Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- ALA accredited MLS or MLIS is required.
- Minimum three years Engineering or Computer Science liaison librarian experience in an academic or research library or corporate setting
- Knowledgeable of best practices in science and engineering librarianship
- Conduct consultations in-person, phone, and email
- Possess strong teaching and presentation skills; maintains currency in pedagogical practices and strategies
- Possess strong knowledge of engineering literature (both print and electronic) and scholarly communication practices, e.g., Compendex, IEEE Xplore, INSPEC, Web of Science, and other resources
- Adept at using resources to support instruction, e.g., Blackboard, LibGuides, EndNote, and tutorials as well as keeping up with emerging technologies
- Possess personal attributes and experience to perform outreach work in the engineering school
- Ability to work some evenings to conduct instruction sessions or consultations
- Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively or independently
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills with strong customer service orientation
- Excellent organizational skills, including time and project management
- Approach work from an equity and inclusion perspective in dealing with students and faculty
- Record of active membership in professional associations and scholarship (presentations and publications) to meet reappointment, tenure, and promotion criteria
REFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Passion to work with undergraduate Engineering and Computer Science students.
- Hold an undergraduate or graduate degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, science, or related field
- Experience working with Engineers in a specialized library or scientific research community
- Experience with collection development
- Experience serving online students and faculty and working remotely
- Familiarity with information literacy outcomes and assessment in the scientific research community
- Monitor and develop best practices for engineering librarianship
- Capable of adapting to change in the School of Engineering and Copley Library
- Experience with software and programming languages appropriate to engineering and computer science, e.g., Solidworks, Excel, SPSS, Tableau, and Stata and programming languages, e.g., R, Python, or others.
- Experience with data science and big data
Posting Salary:
$83,175 to $112,781; Commensurate with qualifications, experience, and advanced degrees; Excellent benefits
